Machines help us get the job done—but they can also cause serious injuries if not used safely.
Two of the most common risks are:
- Hand crush injuries from moving parts
- Electric shocks from exposed or faulty wiring
Most of these accidents happen when machine guards are missing, damaged, or bypassed.
Common Hazards
- Reaching into moving parts (belts, gears, blades)
- Working on machines without isolating power
- Using equipment with exposed wires or broken covers
- Removing or tampering with safety guards

- Never remove or bypass a guard—they’re there to protect you
- If a guard is damaged or missing, report it immediately
- Keep hands, clothing, and tools away from moving parts
[2] Lockout Before Maintenance
- Turn off and isolate power before cleaning, fixing, or clearing jams
- Follow proper Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures
[3] Stay Alert to Electrical Risks
- Don’t use machines with frayed cords or exposed wires
- Keep electrical panels closed and dry
- Use insulated tools and dry hands when working near electricity
[4] Wear the Right PPE
- Use cut-resistant gloves where appropriate
- Wear non-conductive boots and gloves when working with electrical tools
Remember
